Dear Loyal Customers, Friends and Constant Readers-
STORIES PART III: People love a good story. I love them as much as anyone. As I personally have been an avid collector of Stephen King works for 20 years now, I know that collectors have an insatiable appetite to hear how another collector acquired a certain favorite book, or "stole" a rare book at a ridiculously low price at a tag sale. As collectors, we simply like to share our stories and our "Pride and Joys" with each other. What is so cool about being a collector, is that you shape your collection the way YOU want it. Your items may (or may not) be appealing to another collector, but the bottom line is that we all GET IT. We understand WHY an item is loved by someone else because we all all have a similar type item in our own collections. So, over the next few weeks, I hope to pass on some of my own stories to you.
Remarques....There has been some friendly debate amongst collectors as to what is the "true" definition of a remarque. But we collectors all pretty much agree that a remarque is an original sketch/illustration/drawing/doodle that either the author (more rare) or artist (more typical) has hand drawn in a book. Remarqued copies of books have been around for decades, if not centuries, but in the Stephen King collecting world, it was renowned artist (and personal friend) Michael Whelan (Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger, Firestarter and Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower) who made remarques in King novels a highly collectible and coveted (by some) item.
When Dark Tower VII was published in 2004, artist Michael Whelan incorporated some original artwork into roughly 30 books (which he sold from his own web site). Some of these remarques were very detailed and intricate and took him a few days to complete. Of that original Dark Tower series, he did one extraordinary remarque (which I own and is pictured at the top left of this page) in a signed limited copy of DT VII, where he blended his original artwork into the printed scene on the opposing page so that it appears seamless. This remarque remains one of my all-time favorites.
In my opinion, the success of Michael's remarque project with DT VII has led to several other remarque projects over the last 7 years involving King novels. A UK bookseller did an extensive remarque project with a UK edition of Colorado Kid and involving original artwork from all 3 artists involved (Potter, Miller and Chadbourne). Most recently, Ned Dameron (DT III: The Waste Lands) is close to completing a remarque project of 21 scenes from The Waste Lands. My personal favorite of Ned's (so far) from my collection is The Plaster Man, pictured at top right of this page. Ned's work is truly fantastic and his use of color as well as space on two pages makes for an awesome piece of artwork. Also, artist Don Maitz completed and sold in spring 2010, 19 exquisite remarques (also done elaborately in color) depicting different scenes from Desperation, done in Donald Grant Publisher's slipcased Artist Edition. My personal favorite is the Black Widow Spiders pictured above followed by the Diablo Mine. The next three remarques above are all from Michael Whelan....Roland carrying Jake at the Temple of the Oracle (left) and Roland and Jake facing the Slow Mutants under the mountain (right) were done in two of my personal S/L copies of The Gunslinger. Father Callahan (middle) is a remarque of me that Michael did after he depicted me as the new face of Father Callahan in Stephen King's on-line interactive Discordia game. The final remarque in that row (above right) was one that Ned Dameron did for TheDarkTower.com's Haven Foundation Fundraiser this year. Just added 4 more of my remarques...the first is Ned Dameron's remarque of Shardik from The Waste Lands, the next two were done by Michael Whelan in two other copies of the S/L Gunslinger (1st is Roland and the Man in Black holding palaver in the golgotha, the 2nd is the Man in Black in the Mountains). The final remarque I posted is the one Michael did in my copy of Knowing Darkness: Artists Inspired by Stephen King.
As an art lover and a junkie for King novels, remarques are something that totally excite me as a collector. At last count, I own more than 40 remarques in my personal collection (roughly 20 by Michael Whelan), with one having been drawn by Stephen King himself (a sign that says "Beware of Dog" in a signed copy of Cujo). When I can figure out how better to manipulate the layout of this web site, I plan to devote a whole page to images of remarques in King novels. And what is exciting about the future for you, my friends and customers, is that I hope to initiate remarque projects with other artists associated with King novels with those remarques sold only here at Betts Books. I'll keep you updated.

SALEM'S LOT DELUXE LETTERED EDITION: Twenty-Five roman numbered copies bound in black goatskin leather over archival boards were produced. This Deluxe Lettered copy special package is not numbered and comes with some most unusual extras (I just spoke to Jerad at Centipede Press and he told me that only 4 of these packages were produced):
Stephen King interviews bound as separate book. These were interviews with King that the publisher found from old books and the like and set in the same format as Salem's Lot. However, time slipped away and the publisher never managed to secure permissions to reprint them in the actual Salem’s Lot novel. (It would have been too expensive anyway.) The interviews mostly date from 1976 to about 1980, and all concern Salem's Lot in some way. They are printed in the same layout and at the same size as the book (9 x 13). They are bound as a separate book with a matching slipcase.
Next, the book comes with a high-resolution copy of the publisher’s only letter from Mr. King during the production of the book, in which King praises the layout and the design of the book. It also comes with high-resolution copies of all correspondence with King's attorneys and other publishers, and Jerry Uelsmann's letters.
Also included are the elusive extra suite of prints by Jerry Uelsmann. These are printed on super high quality paper. They are approx. 10 x 15 inches in size. The photographs and the correspondence are housed in a custom made black folder.
It also comes with the cleaning cloth that is used to clean the slipcase, the original order form, which is something that was only distributed electronically.
